Establishing Your Own School
The What (1st of 7Ws)
What is the market for Online Teaching, Course Creation and Online Schools or Academies? Let’s define some words that sound the same but they are actually different.
What is Online Learning? It always involves an internet connection and can include virtual face-to-face interactions through webinars, online lectures, virtual meetings. Students use online tools such as online curriculum or virtual space or conferencing software. It’s a mix of virtual learning and blended learning.
What is Virtual Learning? Instruction is delivered through the internet, software, or both. It can be used in a self-pacing format (individualized) or live web conferencing between students and instructors. Example: Augmented Reality; Virtual reality; Mixed Reality; Extended Reality.
What is e-Learning? It utilizes digital tools for teaching and learning, and the technology facilitates the learning process. It can be used online or in a classroom setting. Students take a course from a teacher but only interact with the teacher online. Students have unlimited access to the content — 24/7 for 365 days. The course completion, program, or degree is distributed online. Surge belongs to this type of learning.
What is Distance Learning? Same structure as online learning; traditionally a correspondence course and now can be an open or fixed class schedule. Its specific purpose is to attract students from all locations. It can provide instruction to someone learning in a different time and place than that of the teacher and other students.
What is Blended Learning? Blended learning is the combination of classroom and virtual learning. Ideally integrates virtual learning in a way that individualizes and enhances instruction for students.
The Who (2nd of 7Ws)
The Who. These are the Stakeholders. — the key players in the e-learning industry and the target market. (these are the students).
- The key players include GAFA (Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple) and leading companies investing in hardware and software related to e-learning technologies;
- Apps Developers
- Universities/ colleges/ schools/ academies – educational institutions,
- Testing centers for school entrance and licensure and proficiency exams
- Companies also need them for their training and business meetings – even small companies
- Individuals like private teachers and school owners cannot help but use these e-learning gadgets and apps.
The market for students is categorized by age, gender, course and purchasing power to best suit their needs and even create wants. The power of ads on economics, supply and create demands.
The Where (3rd of 7Ws)
The Where. As you can see from the facts and figures, the Global Academic e-Learning Market from 2019 to 2023 in the United States, rose to 10 % and 40%. One of the Key Drivers for this market will be the increasing e-learning enrollment in Higher Education; ten thousand plus reports covering niche topics. With the Top 10 growth rate in e-learning by Country, India is number 1 then China, Malaysia.
The When (4th of 7Ws)
The When. More people are adapting and adopting online learning because of its:
- Accessibility. 24/7 E-learning, 365 days Open Online Education
- Convenience. Simply log in to the virtual campus from the comfort of your own home, office, vacation spot, or even when traveling.
- Flexibility. Study/work at your own pace
- Be Your Own Boss. Work on your own time and schedule.
Indeed, now is the time to invest in e-learning!
The Which (5th of 7Ws)
The Which. The e-Learning Market, by Product. We focus here on the developers, innovators, school managers and teachers.
As of 2016, it can be seen that the global e-Learning market is growing, with Asia showing the greatest potential for expansion. By September 2019, statistics from a Vietnamese company indicates 109 Edtech start-ups in the market with different content offers – from language study courses, exams preparation to technical and life skills, targeting different B2C and B2B segments.
Kanji for Crisis has 2 characters. One means Dangerous and the other means Opportunity. May we take the opportunity to discover more skills, knowledge and apps to serve humanity during these trying times. It is also a chance for a change! But taking each character apart shows a whole other picture. The first character means “dangerous” while the second means “opportunity.” That is what a crisis is after all. It is dangerous, scary and many other things but it also represents an opportunity, a chance for a change.
The Whose (6th of 7Ws)
The Whose. In the e-Learning Market, we focus on the End Users: the students and workers.
- Teaching & Learning Process – CONTENT
-
- Academic e-learning — subjects, courses, niches, talents, skills, hobbies
- Corporate e-learning — job-related orientation, training, business communication
- Delivery Process — TOOLS & PLATFORMS

- Implementation of IT security and cloud based solutions
- Rapid growth in online content & digitization
- Innovations in wearable technologies (Augmented Reality)
- Learning management systems (LMS) are switching over to cloud-based systems.
The Why (7th of 7Ws)
The Why. Why e-learning and why big companies like GAFA are investing in e-learning? E-learning opens big doors for career and business opportunities as people will realize its accessibility, scalability, affordability, updatability, collaboration, personalization, interactivity, assessment and more. As an online instructor and/or online school owner, you could be earning more than your regular income at the comfort of your home. The earning potential for course creation is big and this could be a good passive income for years. Working as a teacher for a company may require some qualifications, like a bachelor’s or master’s degree, TESOL, CELTA, teaching experiences, at least 900 TOEIC score, Level 9 IELTS, etc.
So, all you need is expertise in a niche subject, a computer/laptop/tablet and an internet connection, these are enough to launch your own school online!

Online Teaching
Children learning various subjects. Teachers delivering their lessons. Talented people coaching the how to’s of their niche or niches. Actually, these can be easily done at the comfort of your home but behind the content, tools, apps, web hostings, theme builders is a big, wide e-learning market. Think of FVA that started Freelancing Course with 12 lessons and as the demands grow, they now have 20 lessons and growing niche courses. There are still more niche courses to explore that I hope more people can enjoy this 21st century-type of relevant education.
Last week, I was approached by at least 3 people. They expressed that they’d like to be Online Teachers who think more as ESL or English Teachers. Another one wanted to start a school. At FVA Japan and FVA Vietnam, we have students who are freelance English Teachers and we actually encourage them to establish their own online school.
Online Teaching as a Communication Process
For anyone planning to launch an Online School, may you consider your offered lessons or courses as a 2-way communication process and not just delivering your lessons/courses. Here’s a model that would make it easier for you to understand how wide and deep e-learning is.
Source of information: teachers, trainers and coaches.
Message: Subject/Course.
Channel: individual/private lesson or group/corporate lesson the delivery is either Live Lesson or Pre-recorded Session. In the Channels, we have tools, apps, platforms and broadcast media like Facebook Live, Streamyard, Zoom or Skype.
Receivers: students or trainees.
Effect: assessment to check on the students or trainees of the Message and Channel. Schools must regularly conduct assessments or evaluations to check the performance of the teachers, students and staff and even consider feedback.
Ways to Earn Money as an Online Language Teacher
Just a specific example of how an online language teacher can earn money. Let’s say the main job is English Teaching, be it one on one or private lesson or group lesson. Your lessons can be converted into modules with certificates of completion. Then you can digitize them like create audiobook, kindle. You can also offer to edit the thesis of your students or prepare them for exams. With your online platform, you can get sponsors or ads or membership.
You can also have side hustles as an online teacher like creating a course for market platforms like Udemy or membership platforms like Thinkific, Zenler, Lynda, Kajabi and many more online course creation platforms. You can also sell educational materials like textbooks, workbooks and many other learning stuff.
What is E-Learning
The delivery of learning, training or education through electronic means. It involves the use of technology to enable people to learn anywhere at any time. Let’s discuss the Pros and Cons of e-learning. It has a global reach and can be easily accessed by people around the world. There’s no need to travel. It expanses multiple devices. It can be in the hands of people who need them, at all times, 24/7.
Pros of e-Learning:
Reduces costs for the school, family and organizations. When you develop an e-learning course, you can deliver the same message to all learners consistently. In e-learning, it is self-paced, self-directed. It can work in any location at any time. It can be updated quickly and easily. Since it’s accessible anytime of the day, it’s easier to manage a large group of students. E-learning has cross-platform support and it is inexpensive worldwide.
Cons of E-Learning:
Not good for those who lack self-discipline. There are no face-to-face interactions, lack of flexibility, lack of input from trainers. It is overwhelming for some people who were never exposed to computers and so many new terminologies to learn.
Challenges:
lack of awareness of the e-learning platforms, low adoption rate, bandwidth and connectivity issues. Some may have low quality content. Students may have difficulty in engaging actively in online discussions. Changes from a normal learning environment is indeed hard for some people especially if electronic devices are used.
Recommendations to improve e-Learning
- Incorporating a blended learning method.
- Marked improvement in accessibility and connectivity.
- Incorporating mobile learning.
- Setting up a National Level e-Content development center.
- Invest in training and development of e-content experts.
- Ensure that quality e-content is developed and monitored.
- Enable the promotion of knowledge-sharing.
- Development of procedures , policies and standards.
- Monitor e-Learning practices and initiating research in e-Learning.
Steps in e-Learning Preparation Process
- Set goals for your learners and for yourself as the teacher or school manager.
- Gather resources. Be resourceful. Gather learning management system. Skill up or reskill in the e-learning tools.
- Define concepts. New terminologies that need to be understood well and clearly explained to students.
- Map out the e-learning course. Create an outline for the e-learning course that includes the important topics, modules, and detailed timeline of each step involved.
- Research your target audience. If possible, conduct needs analysis. Check the background or status of your students. What would be the relevant topic and how it will be presented to them.
- Set expectations and assign project responsibilities. Let your students know what their learning activities, guidelines and deadlines are. You can encourage them to use project management platforms. There are a lot online such as Trello, Monday, Asana, Zoho Projects.
- Create an in-depth course description and syllabus. It must include real world applications and benefits associated with the subject matter.
Challenges in e-Learning
It involves a great deal of preparation, organization and planning. It is really overwhelming to those who are just starting in online teaching or managing an online school. Organization is the key. Planning every step of the development stages beforehand can allow you to stay on-task and on-target.
e-Learning Management
It is designed to identify training and learning gaps, utilizing analytical data and reporting. It is also often called: Course Management System, Pedagogical Platform and e-Learning Platform. It is a cloud-based software package that enables enterprises to deliver learning content and resources.
It is often web and cloud-based to facilitate 24/7 access to e-learning courses and relevant education. It is considered to be the missing bridge between current education improvements and effective uses of technology.
Purpose of e-Learning Management
It delivers and manages all types of content, including video, courses, and documents. In the education and higher education markets, an LMS will include a variety of functionality that is similar to corporate but will have features such as rubrics, teacher and instructor-facilitated learning, a discussion board, and often the use of a syllabus.
One of the challenges in using LMS functionalities to increase efficiency is lack of integration and inflexible reporting capabilities. Without these it is difficult to measure the impact of training on any business.
Six Major Advantages of LMS
- Interoperability
- Accessibility
- Reusability
- Durability
- Maintenance Ability
- Adaptability
There are actually many advantages in LMS (Learning Management System). Each learning management system is a secure tool and robust server and facilitates uploading, storing and sharing of learning resources in the form of courses, assessments, documents and manuals or guides that complement a company’s learning program. Traditional learning, for example conventional seminars, is limited to verbal training or written instructions by trainers. Thanks to an advanced learning management system, learners are able to access a wide array of learning elements in different media formats such as HTML, videos, audio, text files, and others.
Benefits of LMS
Faster turnaround, User-Friendly, Lower e-Learning costs, Easier to scale and update. More efficient use of resources.
Challenges
Lower Quality, Lack of creative control, Decreased learner engagement.
Online School Branding
Create your own e-learning school that will be attractive to students and appreciate the new normal way of acquiring education. Conceptualize an Online School Branding. Branding is about making an emotional connection.” Create your school logo, choose colors that best represent you, fonts that stand out as your brand identity, description of your school and the VMG. Vision, Mission and Goals.
How is your school perceived by the current and prospective students? What attributes or descriptions do you hope students will think of first when they hear your school name?
