II. How To Create Resume

1. Resume v. Curriculum Vitae

https://novoresume.com/career-blog/cv-vs-resume-what-is-the-difference

Resume

A resume is a short, straight-to-the-point, document created for the purpose of applying to a specific job.

It highlights work experiences and skills relevant to a specific job you are applying for. This also specifies contributions made in previous work.

Curriculum Vitae

A CV is a very in-depth document that describes your career journey step-by-step, including all sorts of personal information. You can look at the CV as a comprehensive description of everything you have ever done, all the achievements you are proud of, and all the publications that bear your name.

2. How to start creating a resume?

i. Substance

What should be the content of your resume?

The most important sections (contact, work, and education details) should be written on the first page.

Objective

Start with an objective or professional summary. Summarized your work background, skills, and qualifications.

The objective part is optional.

Work Background

Company connected with

List down all the companies you have worked with and arrange them in reverse chronological order starting with the most recent company you are currently working/worked with to the oldest.

For fresh graduates or has no work experience yet, list down all volunteer activities, club and organization’s involvement, and On-The-Job training experience.

Get the estimated period of employment from all the companies. It does not need to include the exact date. MM/YYYY format is enough. Use this format consistently.

Include the company’s location (city, state, and country).

Position held

For every company, list down the position held.

Tasks and responsibilities

Use bullet points as a way to enumerate tasks and responsibilities.

Be detailed as possible when enumerating tasks and responsibilities. But keep a balance of having a text-heavy-looking enumeration.

Mention skills you have learned, developed, or mastered over time.

Use numbers or percentages that show strong results.

Choose action words/verbs that suggest you can be trusted with responsibilities.

Paraphrase action words. Do not use the same action words twice to avoid repetition of words. This will showcase your communication skills (vocabulary building).

Mention software/apps used to demonstrate mastery of technical skills.

Match job description in the resume with what is asked from the job advertisement.

Educational Background

Arrange educational attainment in reverse chronological order. The most recent degree level, training, seminar completed or attended at the top of the list.

Avoid using acronyms in the course completed.

Specify topics/discussion in any seminar, training or workshop attended.

Include professional affiliations, study abroad and campus involvement, projects and thesis completed, honors, and awards.

ii. Form

How should a resume look like?

Headings

Create section headings in capslock and bold letters (ABOUT ME, WORK HISTORY, EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND, CORE COMPETENCIES, CONTACT ME) to set other text apart and easier to scan through.

Observe the same font size all throughout.

Fonts

The ideal font size is 10.5 to 12.

The name should be at the top of the resume at least 15 to 16 font size.

Margin

1-inch all four sides to make sure that the resume is printable.

What not to include?

Personal information does not have to be mentioned in your resume. Information like age, marital status, height, weight, birth date, parent’s name, religious affiliation

III. What are Transferable Skills?

These are skills or abilities you have acquired and developed at a certain job and can certainly apply in a different work experience.

Examples: Fluent speaker, Time management, Team player, Conflict Management, Critical Thinking, Adaptive, Fast-learner.

When presenting Transferable skills, sub-categorize them according to industry.

IV. Application Letter v. Cover Letter

https://work.chron.com/application-letter-vs-cover-letter-5451.html

An application letter might contain a more extensive introduction simply because this letter serves a purpose that’s similar to the resume.

Cover letters typically contain a brief introduction. The introduction in a cover letter consists of three to four sentences about the job seeker’s work experiences, education, accomplishments and the type of organizations he feels are best suited for his qualifications.
